The poem, “Silenced by the Rules of Society,” by Cas Eloise is a lyric poem that expresses the thoughts of a struggled teen who wants to be herself, but feels she is restricted by society.Themes the poem revolves around are freedom and struggle for individuality. The verse, “standing up for being different” follows her thoughts of saying how society is harsh to those who are different and makes them a target. This expresses that uniqueness is looked down upon in the society she grew up in and that she feels restricted by society due to expectations of how she is supposed to be and fit what would be considered the norm. “I feel like I am silently screaming, Trapped in the darkest corner of the smallest room in my mind,” illustrates the pain she endures not being able to be herself. The poem consists of seven stanzas of 19 verses in total. There is no identifiable rhyming pattern such as “aabb” or “abab.” “Just for standing out for being different, Standing up for being different,” are similar verses that each invokes different meanings with the change of a few words adding a dramatic effect to the poem. “Trapped in the darkest corner of the smallest room in my mind,” is an example of imagery used in the poem. Similes are another literary device that is used when she explains how she feels like she is screaming. The poet’s message is that the rules of society restricts one from being themselves and that societies can hold expectations that make the people in it more alike and targeting those who stand out to be unique. This agonizes the person, as they need to keep their thoughts and feelings to themselves to not be targeted and differentiated in society, as those who are unique are not accepted with open arms and warm smiles.

“Silenced by the Rules of Society,” by Cas Eloise
I feel like I am silently screaming,
Trapped in the darkest corner of the smallest room in my mind,
Covered in the scrawling's of my dark life.
I want to scream out,
Let it out but will I be heard?
Probably not,
I've been silenced,
Silenced by the rules of society.
I wonder how long this society has been this harsh,
Why we are seen as almost demigods?
Just for standing out for being different,
Standing up for being different.
Is this was makes us such a target?
A target for our society,
Our society has been doped up and dumbed down by the media of
Television.
What they don't seem to grasp is,
The fact that we are,
Very much alive.
