You look at me with such contempt
All because I'm not acting "normal"
As if being different is wrong

There truly is no normal
In this society that's the striving to be different
Where everyone wants to be unique
But if someone seems odd, you hate them

Everyone has to act a certain way
Dress in the same name brands2
Even love the same music
And Gods forbid if someone doesn't believe in God
What's wrong with being different?

Nobody wants to "conform to the norm"
They want to be like the hippies,
But be like everyone else
Or still seem "normal"
Tell me, what is "normal"
But what is different?

POETRY

"Society Today," by Anonymous

The poem, “Society Today,” questions the fine line that society places between being normal and different. The poem is formed of four stanzas each stanza increasing in more stanza than the last. The first stanza starts with four verses and it increases from there and this creates a physical shape for the poem. The poem starts off talking about how those who are seen to be different are given a disapproving look by those who act and dress the same. “Where everyone wants to be unique. But if someone seems odd, you hate them,” are two verses that portray the irony of society’s ways of how it encourages individuality through media and education, but at the same time people look down upon those who are seen to be different.  The poet also questions if there is anything wrong with being different which leads to the feelings of people in society of how no one wants to conform to what the majority of the population does.  The last two lines, “Tell me, what is ‘normal.’ But what is different?” leave the audience to think about if society can actually distinguish someone as normal or different. The message the poet is trying to convey is that there is no definition for being normal as everyone varies from one another and should not try to be the same and classify themselves as normal. Just because a large majority of the population acts the same way and dresses the same way does not mean it is correct.
