Barriers of Soceity

POETRY

"Would it Be Possible?" by Khalid

The haiku poem, “Would it Be Possible?” by Khalid conveys the result of overcoming societal barriers which could include those associated with culture, beliefs, words of others, and expectations. The whole poem talks about how looking past boundaries of one’s country and the habits that are present in that country, will allow one to appreciate and call the rest of the world also their country opening up more opportunities, especially to discover one self and the rest of the world. The structure of the haiku poem is that it consists of seventeen syllables in total. The limited number of syllables that could be used makes each verse significant, as the poet has to convey their whole message with very few words. Instead of stating exactly what the character in the poem feels or bluntly stating the message the reader is supposed to grasp from the poem, the verses form a bigger idea that can almost be seen as a metaphor. This idea will allow the reader to interpret how the verses relate. The line, “absolutely all the world becomes my country” is used to showthe overcoming of the boundaries which will let the person relate to the whole world and also do anything they wish in the world without being confined to their country and its boundaries. The poet’s message through this poem is not let the country you are from or are living in stop you from exploring the rest of the world. When a person stops seeing their life as to being enclosed by the expectations, traditions and beliefs of one country, they are not able to experience what the rest of the world has to offer. This may result in them straying away from the desires of their parents and the rules their certain culture or residence may hold, but one is able to be happy finding what they like and wish to accept in the world.

When people
neglect the boundaries
and habits
between them,
absolutely all the world
becomes my country.
